BAKUCHIOL BEAUTY ESSENTIALS

Unlike retinol-based products that tend to be formulated as night creams and evening serums, bakuchiol is popping up in everything from day creams and cleansers to face masks and serums. Here are the bakuchiol skincare essentials we’ve currently got on ou

Avène training manager Janis McNicholas says the synergy that bakuchiol – or Sytenol – has with other youth-restoring ingredients is particularly exciting. Within the new Avène DermAbsolu skincare collection, Sytenol has been teamed up with vanilla polyphenols. McNicholas explains that when paired together, the duo delivers unprecedented benefits to the skin’s cellular structure, resculpting it and restoring its density and comfort.

“Our goal from the start was to develop high-tech, evidence-based products that prevented the visible signs of ageing, including dullness, and fine lines and wrinkles, all while being 100 per cent natural,” explains Kiwi skincare entrepreneur, Emma Lewisham. For one of the newest additions to her eponymous skincare line, Supernatural Triple Vitamin A+ Face Oil, Lewisham has turned to bakuchiol as the hero ingredient. The formulation contains three concentrated sources of vitamin A and a host of 20 nurturing botanicals that help to restore youthfulness and luminosity to skin.

This clever Overnight Retinol Mask (available from the Skin Wardrobe) by cult Scandi skincare brand Lernberger Stafsing doesn’t just harness the line-fighting power of bakuchiol, it features a retinyl palmitate – a retinoid – too. Together with algae extract, the restorative formulation takes your beauty sleep to the next level. The mask works to promote collagen production, restore radiance and even out skin tone so you rise and shine with a smoother, brighter complexion.

Biossance Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum (available from Sephora) combines the skin-nurturing properties of not only bakuchiol, but another relative newcomer: squalane. This superstar duo works to press pause on the ageing process with a retinol-free formula that evens skin tone and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Gentle and non-irritating, the serum is suitable for all skin types.

There’s a reason why beauty sleep is important – when we’re getting that much-needed shut eye, our skin goes into repair mode. Ole Henriksen Goodnight Glow Retin-ALT Sleeping Crème (available from Sephora) uses alpha hydroxy acids and bakuchiol to give skin a helping hand. The gentle-yet-effective formula uses the two star ingredients to resurface skin, so while you’re in dreamland, your skin is gaining the benefits.

Face oils are renowned for combining the best botanical ingredients to create nourishing formulations and Omorovicza Miracle Facial Oil (from MECCA) is no exception. Bakuchiol is at the heart of this face oil, which works to restore youthfulness to skin. Blackthorn berry, rosehip and sweet almond oil keep skin hydrated right around the clock, while working to balance skin and reduce shine, making it the perfect option for those with oily and combination skin types.
