Hold on to that feeling of stepping out of the salon with radiant tresses.

“YOUR HAIR NEEDS WILL LIKELY CHANGE FROM SEASON TO SEASON.”

EMMA COCKER

Most of us are familiar with the transformative power of a great haircut or blow wave. In fact, nothing quite boosts one’s confidence like stepping out of the salon with voluminous, radiant tresses. But quite often, that initial feel-good moment is short-lived. Without the right at-home care, our tresses can quickly revert to their former, lacklustre selves. “When hair is unhealthy it can become unmanageable, tangle easily, and lack the body, lustre and shine we all adore,” explains Emma Cocker, Joico ambassador and owner of Dye Pretty salon.

Fortunately, when armed with expert advice and nurturing products, it’s possible to recreate salon-worthy tresses at home. “Part of our mission here at Dye Pretty is to equip our clients with the knowledge to maintain salon-perfect hair every day,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to ask your own stylist for some tips or for information about the products that are being used on your hair so that you, too, can recreate the look and feel at home.”

STRONG FOUNDATIONS

Getting to the root of hair issues is crucial if you want luminous locks, and while scalp issues have traditionally been a bit of a taboo topic, Cocker says it’s something your hairdresser can help with. “Scalp problems can be very embarrassing for those affected by them. However, this is something that any experienced stylist will have come across many times in their career.” While poor scalp health can contribute to dreaded dandruff, Cocker says scalp health has a significant impact on overall hair health, too. “When the scalp is unhealthy, hair follicles can become compromised, which affects how the hair grows from the root,” she explains. “The scalp is the foundation from which your hair grows, so if we look after it and treat it well, we can create an optimum environment for quality healthy hair growth.” Although addressing the likes of dandruff might be mortifying to some, Cocker says a great hairdresser should have a vast knowledge of hair and scalp conditions. “Through a thorough hair and scalp analysis, they should be able to diagnose the condition and identify the best course of action – whether that be something addressed in-salon such as a change in products, or a recommendation to seek medical advice.”

CREATING A ROUTINE

If you want round-the-clock radiant hair, using the right products is hugely important, says Cocker. Healthy hair begins with the right in-salon treatments and products, particularly where coloured hair is concerned. “There are a number of amazing bond-protecting pre-colour treatments that we can use in the salon to strengthen and protect hair throughout the colouring process,” explains Cocker. “We love the Joico Defy Damage Pro Series. This magical two-step product is applied at the start and at the end of the service to protect the hair from breakage, offer a better colour deposit, and maintain colour vibrancy post-salon visit.”

As for which Joico haircare range you should be stepping out of the salon with, it’s important to talk with your hairdresser about creating a nourishing routine that works for you. “No two heads of hair are the same, and your hair needs will likely change from season to season and as you change length or colour,” says Cocker. To decipher which products are suited to your unique needs, a great hairdresser should take the time to learn about how their clients are feeling about their hair. Discussing your lifestyle, usual routine and any issues you have around your hair with your hairdresser will help them create a suite of suitable take-home haircare, says Cocker.
