OUR WINNING POEM

-

This month’s winning poet, Stephanie Mayne enjoys writing poetry as a pastime, and is thrilled when any of her creative output receives recognition. She says, “Kingfishers live in the banks of a stream near our home. They sit still whilst waiting for prey, intense and sartorial. I have always found them magical, especially in the way their blue wings flame when they fly.” Stephanie’s ability to create a visual image with very few well-selected words and phrases is impressive. Her use of alliteration (shuttlecock sure; incendiary indigoes; strung sapphire shining; plague of pink) is adept, while her portrayal of the kingfisher’s world – from soaring in the sky to tending to her ‘fumbling blind children’ – is evocative and moving.
