Cultivatin­g a relaxing ambience is a key part of good sleep hygiene. According to the Sleep Foundation, studies have shown that people sleep better when their bedroom is optimised for light and noise level, visual design and practical set-up, temperatur­e and comfort. Bedding is a personal preference, however the ideal bedroom temperatur­e for sleeping is 18.3 degrees Celsius. It’s important to use colours and textures that make you feel at ease at bedtime, and reduce visual clutter as much as possible. Keep lighting and sound levels to a minimum, and use essential oils such as lavender to promote relaxation. The Sleep Foundation also recommends you wash your sheets at least once every two weeks, weekly if you sweat in your sleep or share your bed with a pet.
