A journey through Central Otago not only offers a chance to marvel at breathtaking landscapes and partake in exciting activities, but to discover the flavours of one of Aotearoa’s most vibrant culinary regions. From the sunkissed vineyards and orchards of the Cromwell basin, to the historic goldmining hotels that are still serving the community, each place offers a fresh approach to the tastes of the region.

1 ROYAL HOTEL, NASEBY

While journeying through the tussock-clad hills of Naseby, be sure to pop into the Royal Hotel. First built in 1863, the hotel has been lovingly restored and showcases some of the best flavours of the region, including award-winning Provenance lamb, raised nearby in the high country of the Maniototo.

2 BANNOCKBURN HOTEL, BANNOCKBURN

A proud institution in Central Otago, the Bannockburn Hotel was the first place in the region to be granted a liquor licence and has been pouring exceptional wines and serving delicious food ever since. Here, you’ll find an impressive showcase of the region’s world-class wines and craft beers, paired with a seasonal tapas menu that celebrates the region’s rich food story. Take in spectacular views of the mountains in the beer garden, or while away the hours sitting by the fire.

3 WAIPIATA COUNTRY HOTEL, WAIPIATA

A welcome rest for cyclists on the Otago Central Rail Trail, the Waipiata Country Hotel is a fabulous destination for foodies. Choose from the à la carte menu of fresh and local produce, or bring a group of friends for a cookyour-own barbecue in the alfresco dining area.

4 DANSEYS PASS HOTEL, DANSEYS PASS

One of the best ways to explore Central Otago is by car, and one of the best routes to travel is through the Danseys Pass. Winding between the Maniototo Plain and the Kakanui Range, here on this scenic pass you’ll discover one of the region’s most charming dining destinations, the Danseys Pass Hotel. Fresh produce is the star at this historic hidden gem, with dishes like pumpkin, spinach and green pea risotto and slow-braised lamb shoulder with parsnip purée.

5 DOMAINE-THOMSON, CROMWELL

The cellar door at this organic vineyard is designed with rustic and refined nods to the region’s goldmining history, offering cosy spaces to take in the sights and sensations. Guests can also enjoy Domaine-Thomson’s new private lunch experience. Available for bookings of 4-20, you can enjoy a gourmet meal and premium selection of their Central Otago and Burgundian wines.

6 TE KANO ESTATE, BANNOCKBURN

A departure from the historic homesteads of the region, boutique winery Te Kano Estate boasts one of the most striking vistas in the region. Situated on the slopes of the Kawarau River, the newly opened cellar door sits on a cantilevered floor, a perfect spot to take in the golden afternoon sun. As to the wine, be sure to taste Te Kano Estate’s award-winning chardonnay and pinot noir.

7 FAIGAN’S MILLERS FLAT KITCHEN & CAFÉ, MILLERS FLAT

Faigan’s Millers Flat Kitchen & Café reopened their doors this September, with new owner Mark Jessop of Queenstown’s Prime restaurant at the helm.
