NEW PHENOMENON
Increased recognition of learning as a social process has led to the rise of ‘phenomenon-based learning’. This progressive pedagogical approach has garnered plenty of attention, particularly since Finland’s Core Curriculum for Basic Education mandated its use in 2016. Finland’s education system has long been regarded as one of the world’s best.
Phenomenon-based learning occurs when a subject or topic is taught in a more holistic way. So, rather than separate lessons focused on maths, science and history, all subjects are integrated into the learning of real-world phenomena.
Evidence shows that phenomenonbased learning improves problem-solving skills, reasoning skills, and self-directed learning skills, as well as critical thinking and engagement.
