WELL-DESERVED HATS

Some of New Zealand’s top establishments and restaurants have been recognised for their achievements.

The best wine lists, the best food programmes and the best teams that deliver memorable food and wine experiences in restaurants and bars throughout New Zealand don’t often get the recognition they deserve. So, when one of these operations is recognised with a gong, it’s received with a lot of pride and humility.

The ‘Hats’ awards is a system that recognises excellence in a particular genre of hospitality, from outstanding cocktail bars with excellent food to dining establishments that deliver the complete package of services. Two hats reflect excellence, three hats for outstanding.

Bar Teresa on Emerson Street in Napier is an exciting, modern and fun place to visit. Recognised as rising talent, I think they are already at the top of their game. A smallish 30-seat space with an indoor-outdoor flow, the atmosphere is welcoming and uber-friendly. The cocktails are of course excellent. Try the Meridiano made with Widges Gin, Teresa’s salted white chocolate liqueur, citrus leaf stock and chamomile liqueur. facebook.com/Teresacocktailbar

Already a benchmark producer of fine still and bottle fermented sparkling wine, Amisfield’s restaurant and cellar door in Frankton, Central Otago, has been recognised with an outstanding award and best of status. I’ve dined at Amisfield a few times, with the food from executive chef Vaughan Mabee excellent and well executed. The front of house team also provides a seamless professional service. amisfield.co.nz

The Lodge Bar at Commercial Bay in downtown Auckland not only has the perfect indoor and outdoor space, and stunning food from chef Matt Lambert, the beverage program is modern and well researched and the front of house team eager to showcase the best wine and food for you. Their two hats should be three.
