Save the trees

Rescued wood is being crafted into beautiful tables, stools and more.

- WORDS BY AIMEE McHUGH

Situated on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, New Zealand has been both challenged and protected by the intensity of nature. Earthquakes, high rainfall and mountainous terrain result in an ever-changing landscape, as landslips and floods sweep away giant trees.

These trees are then submerged and protected by the elements for centuries. Guarded from the air that can rot them, time has preserved the trees until they are exposed through natural riverbed erosion.

Tréology rescues these trees – Totara, Rimu, Matai and Kauri – from the rivers, fiords and swamps of Aotearoa, and crafts them into beautiful objects that merge the line between luxury furniture and functional art. Its collection includes finely crafted consoles, dining tables, side tables, award-winning chairs, stools and credenzas, as well as bespoke commissions.

When a tree is recovered from a river, its GPS location is recorded. This travels with the material through the manufacturing process so that when the piece of furniture is completed, the customer will have the GPS co-ordinates of the river where their native timber was rescued. Entering these co-ordinates into Google Earth will take you to the exact spot where the tree was recovered.
