5 WAYS TO USE UP FOOD SCRAPS

-

1

Turn stale bread into croutons by chopping into squares, drizzling olive oil, tossing with herbs and spices and toasting in the oven. 2

Keep corn cobs to make a corn stock. Simply boil them with water, herbs and spices and use the stock in homemade corn chowder. 3

Use up leftover grease and turn it into suet, a kind of animal fat that birds can eat. Strain the leftover drippings and mix with ingredients like nuts and dried fruits. Let it set and place in a bird feeder. 4

Re-use the skin of beetroot to make a natural dye for fabrics. 5

Don’t throw away the tops of leeks. They are full of flavour. Instead, use them in a homemade stock, or thinly slice them and fry up to make a crispy garnish.
