WHAT I’M DRINKING
Tipples that tickle my fancy this month.
Trinity Hill The Gimblett 2020, Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay
A powerful bouquet with ripe varietal fruit scents then layers of oak and mineral earth qualities. Blackberry and iron, dark cherry flesh, plum and black olive, wood smoke and dark spices from toasty barrel. Equally powerful on the palate with flavours of purple-skinned berry fruit, clove and dusty vanilla spice layers. Excellent weight, concentration, lengthy and mouthfeel, delicious! RRP from $39.99.
Pyramid Valley Orange 2021, North Canterbury
Aromas of apricots and orange peko tea, autumn leaves and dried flowers. A distinctive, pure bouquet, natural and new. Flavours reflect the bouquet plus a new grapefruit and orange marmalade tautness, no mistaking the texture of tannins and acidity, but all in keeping with the Pyramid Valley sense of place. Enjoy this wine with paella or similar fragrant dishes. Best from 2022 through 2025. RRP from $35.
Batch Winery Thomas Legacy Syrah 2019, Waiheke Island, Auckland
Youthful and distinctive core aromas of dark raspberry, violets and blackcurrant. There’s no mistaking the peppery, toasty barrel scent and vanilla spice layers. Equally ripe and fruity on the palate with flavours of blackcurrant, plum, raspberry and boysenberry. A lengthy finish and contrasting youthful tart fruit note expanding the drive. RRP from $70.
