LAKE POWELL NAVAJO TRIBAL PARK, ARIZONA

-

Millions of years of erosion from wind and water have given the Upper Antelope Canyon in Arizona, US, its flowing rock formations. Located in the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park, the canyon is only accessible with Navajo guides, who share their knowledge of the site’s fascinating geology and history. The Navajo name for the canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, meaning ‘the place where water runs through the (Slot Canyon) rocks’. Photographers flock to the canyon in the months between March and October to capture the shafts of light that appear around midday, illuminating the sweeping sandstone walls in swirling patterns of orange, red and gold.

The first synthetic orange pigment, chrome orange, was invented in 1809 by French chemist Louis Vauquelin, from a sample of the mineral crocoite, while natural orange dyes have been made from turmeric and saffron.

Orange is an important colour in Buddhism, worn in the robes of monks and is said to represent the highest state of perfection. In many Western cultures, the colour orange is associated with energy and amusement, with clowns often wearing orange wigs.

Artist Vincent van Gogh sometimes used orange in his paintings to depict sunlight, often contrasted against the complementary colour of blue. In fact Van Gogh felt so strongly about the connection between these two colours, he once declared in a letter to his brother that “there is no blue without yellow and without orange.”
