Founded in Tokyo’s Ginza district in Japan’s first Western-style pharmacy in 1872, Shiseido was created by visionary pharmacist Arinobu Fukuhara. Fukuhara was the son of an Eastern herbal medicine doctor. He was educated in Western medicine and trained as a pharmacist, before working his way up in the Japanese navy to Chief Pharmacist. Fukuhara founded Shiseido because he was displeased with the inferior medicine on the market, and his mission was to “take everything and anything good in this world and use it to create new things”.

Gathering together highqualit­y medicine with this entirely new way of running a pharmacy was difficult at first. However, the idea of premium, advanced and authentic products came to be understood, and Shiseido soon developed a reputation as an innovative and trusted pharmacy. Today, Shiseido currently has operations in approximat­ely 120 countries and regions across the globe and has a cult following, thanks to its long list of innovation­s and unique and potent products.

To celebrate their 150th anniversar­y, Shiseido has launched three limited-edition products which symbolise ‘Heritage’, ‘Living Innovation’, and ‘Future’, to signify their past, present, and future.

HERITAGE: 150 YEAR EUDERMINE REVITALIZI­NG ESSENCE

In 1897 Shiseido’s first skincare product, Shiseido Eudermine was launched and it is still one of the most effective and successful skin softening and hydrating essences in the world. Its vivid colour, reminiscen­t of grape wine, became known as ‘Shiseido’s red water’ and to this day, the same deep red is now synonymous with the brand.

Shiseido’s original approach to cosmetics was to view them from a scientific perspectiv­e, and the fact that they started as a cosmetics business with skincare products rather than make-up products was unique at the time. The holistic nature of Eudermine, fusing East and West, science and art, still signifies Shiseido’s pursuit of the essence of beauty.
