OUR WINNING POEM
Art’s poem commemorates Armistice Day on 11 November, the date in 1918 that fighting ceased and an armistice led to the conclusion of WWI. Art uses his memories of children’s games of conkers to draw a parallel with the soldiers battling each other on the frontline.
He says: “I am originally from the UK. My father and grandfather fought in the British army. When the colours in my garden turn to autumn, my thoughts return home. To a small village school where we fought our ‘battles’ with conkers.”
