Change all timing belts at once

-

If you’re replacing one timing belt make sure you replace the others at the same time! There are many vehicles on our road that have more than one timing belt, and if only one of these belts is replaced at a service interval, there is a high risk that the other belt/s will fail before the next interval. A large number of vehicles on our roads require more than one timing belt. Most of these have a balance shaft drive, and the rest require an injector pump belt (diesel engines) or a separate camshaft belt from the crankshaft.

Many examples of this exist in engines from Mitsubishi, Honda, Great Wall.

Camshaft timing belts Too often, only the camshaft belt is replaced. It is important that all

timing system belts are replaced at the same time to avoid engine failure. Overhead cam timing belts can snap unexpectedly at high km as heat and friction weaken the cords that reinforce the belt. The risk of failure goes up sharply after about 100,000km on most overhead cam engines. This is why Gates recommends replacing overhead cam timing belts at the vehicle manufacturers’ replacement intervals.

Balance shaft drives

The balance system consists of two parallel shafts on either side of the crankshaft. Driven by a toothed belt, the balance shafts rotate in opposite directions at twice engine speed. Eccentric weights built into the shafts generate inertial forces that counteract the second order forces so the balance system offsets vibrations in the engine.

These increasingly severe conditions in the engine put more stress on timing belts, and timing belt failure could result in serious damage to an engine. To ensure safe performance, it is necessary to change all the timing belts at the same time.

Gates new timing belt sets

Since it is critical for ALL timing belts to be replaced at the same time, it makes perfect sense to offer all the related belts in convenient vehicle specific packs.

Gates has now introduced the new Gates timing belt set programme. Gates timing belt sets are vehicle specific timing belt packs, with all the relevant timing belts for each application in one convenient box.

Quality timing belts provide quiet, reliable, low maintenance performance kilometre after kilometre. Using high-quality materials and construction, Gates timing belts are manufactured to the toughest OE requirements, and are specified by car manufacturers around the world.

When replacing timing belts, use timing belt sets from Gates the global leader in belt technology. So simple, yet so important.
