Geezers gather again

-

The resounding success of a gala dinner last year to recognise 25 legends of New Zealand motor sport has prompted organisers to hold it again this year.

The inaugural Gathering of Geezers in Wanaka last year saw a crowd of more than 300 honour 25 of New Zealand’s greats of motor racing from across the spectrum – single seaters, saloon car racing, speedway, drag racing, team management, power boats, motorcycles, jet boats and sports administration.

It’s believed to have been the first time so many champions from such a wide range of disciplines had been honoured on the same night. The Warbirds Over Wanaka Community Trust and the Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust.

Gathering of Geezers 2 will be held at the Warbirds and Wheels visitor attraction in Wanaka on the evening of November 6 this year.

The line-up of Geezers to be honoured this time round is still being finalised but those already confirmed include single seater champion Graeme Lawrence, Motocross World commentator and team manager Bob McMurray, and New Zealand land speed record holder Owen Evans.

Owen Evans is looking forward to making the event this time round after he was forced to pull out last year. “I was delayed overseas where I was helping my son Mitch who’s currently racing on the F2 circuit.

Once again the dinner has been timed to coincide with the running of the Highlands 101 international race meeting at the Highlands Motorsport Park which is located just down the road from Wanaka in Cromwell. The weekend of high octane motor racing action includes a round of the Australian GT Championship.
