My Wedding - - REAL WEDDING -

Proposal: BJ proposed to me in August 2008. It was my birthday and he sent me for a full body massage. When I got home, he popped the question and of course I said “yes”. Ceremony Venue: Edgewater Resort & Spa, Rarotonga, right down at the water’s edge. A small gathering with close friends and family. Having a wedding somewhere like Rarotonga meant we would all be on holiday together. The Edgewater is very child-friendly – having three children, this was important to us. The beach was a lovely natural place to come together. What better backdrop than water and the horizon. Reception Venue: The Umu Hut at Edgewater Resort & Spa. Staying at the resort meant we didn’t have to travel. The Umu Hut was nice and private, we had our own bar and waitresses. As our guests were all staying at the Edgewater, it also meant we didn’t have far to go at the end of the night.

Celebrant: Ani Piri, based in Rarotonga. Photographer: Julie at the Edgewater Resort recommended Jay from Nior Photography. Theme: I wanted an orange theme. I love bright orange with black and white, and it looked amazing on the beach. Bride’s Dress: Jopanni Bridal in Mount Maunganui made my dress. I would describe it as Greek style. It was made from a light polyester fabric so I could walk in the water and it would dry quickly. A white dress with the “works” was important to me. It cost me a total of $1,100 including the long veil. It went together beautifully with my hairpiece. Groom’s attire: BJ wore a white shirt with black Wrangler jeans rolled up, and white Havianas. Bridesmaid outfits: Sally (my sister and Maid of Honour) wore a black off-the-shoulder, knee-length dress from KILT, a NZ designer. Groomsmen attire: BJ’s two brothers wore black shirts, black Wrangler jeans and black Haviana jandals. All three guys had matching Dragon sunglasses.

Flowers: Orange orchids – they were beautiful! Hair & Makeup: My sister, mother, mother-in-law and I all had our hair and makeup done by Sanil Singh at Edgewater Resort & Spa Salon. He was amazing! Cake: Single tier, square chocolate mud cake with white icing and flower decoration on top. Décor: The staff at the Edgewater Resort organised the reception in a hut. It was beautifully laid out with white linen and orange organza runners with flower arrangements on the tables. Stationery: About a year and a half before the date, we sent out Save The Dates to give people an idea. Then, in February 2012 we sent the formal invites. Entertainment: We had an Island string band play for an hour before the reception formally started. Then we had a speaker and a playlist on an iPod.

Transportation: This was easy – we didn’t need transport! The Service: We like to keep things basic, so our celebrant just used the basic vows which suited us. Our wedding song was Bruno Mars’ Count On Me, chosen because it talks of friendship which we think is a huge part of marriage and being together. Our best friend, Mike read “The One” for us which was perfect. Most memorable moment: Watching my little girl walk down the aisle in front of me when I realised “oh my gosh, this is it”. I really loved walking down the beach towards everyone. Anything else worth mentioning: BJ’s speech … this was a laugh. We both went to bed to organise our speeches. The next minute, BJ was snoring while wife-to-be wrote his speech out for him! This must be the beginning! Who made the day special: Our families contributed so much to make our wedding possible, and to have such special friends there made our day! My sister Sally was a huge help planning the wedding. I was a bit relaxed about it all and she kept things ticking along. Extra special: Our three children were a huge part of our wedding. Tanieka (5) was the flowergirl and wore a white dress made by Jopanni Bridal. She wore a head garland with white and orange orchids and threw silk petals down the aisle. Our three year old boy was dressed like BJ and carried the rings, and our seven month old baby was dressed like BJ and carried by BJ’s youngest brother, Jaren. It felt complete to have the children up at the front with us. Final note: Having Julie from the Edgewater Resort was like having a wedding planner! She was amazing! It took a lot of stress off me. Being a busy mum who works, I wondered how it would all work out, but it went ahead without a hiccup … just as Julie had assured me it would!
