Special guest for CanTeen quiz

-

Wardini Books’ annual fundraiser for CanTeen Hawke’s Bay is back — with a special guest.

In its fifth year, the not too literary book quiz night has gained sponsorship from Penguin Random House NZ which is flying Dame Fiona Kidman to the Bay.

The quiz is the brainchild of Gareth Ward, author and coowner of Wardini Books.

“I was thinking about the huge number of book clubs in this area and had a vision of a big room full of people having the time of their lives answering tricky, hilarious and downright bizarre questions about books. The obvious thing was to put this idea to good use and support CanTeen.”

Kerrie Waby is the youth support coordinator for CanTeen Hawke’s Bay.

“Everyone from CanTeen who is attending will be more than willing to have a chat and share with you parts of their journey or involvement with CanTeen.”

The night involves eight rounds of 10 questions on anything from New Zealand publications to classic children’s books. By far the most popular round is the ‘Inappropriate Actresses’ round in which lines from famous books are performed in an unusual manner by local acting legends Ali Beal and Lynda Corner.

Dame Fiona is looking forward to visiting Havelock North, and supporting CanTeen.

“CanTeen is one of the causes that I have chosen to support over several years. Cancer has touched my own family so I know how important strong support systems are for people while they make this journey through treatment and its outcomes. Young people, in particular, need love and belief in them to find the necessary strength to work through their illness. I like to think that the promise and enjoyment of those precious teenage years is not lost to them in the shadow of cancer, and that hope will illuminate their way.” “If you’re not already part of a book club but know a bunch of people who this night would appeal to, grab them, get a team of six or 10 people together and register. It’s about having a great time and supporting kids who really need it,” Gareth says.

■ Registrations are now open. Tables of six for $60 and 10 for $100. Contact Wardini Books on 877 7783, email books@wardini.co.nz or pop in to the Havelock North or Napier stores.
