Designers’ work on show in store
Showing your garments on the runway is the dream of many a fashion designer — having them on show in an exclusive fashion store is the icing on the cake.
Napier Girls’ High School student Eleanor Hollings-Hatton and Hastings Girls’ High School student Kym Sedcole were both announced as winners of the Minha Supreme Award in the 2018 Make and Model Competition, a long running event held annually and hosted by the A&P Society. The girls’ garments are on display in the window of Napier’s Dalton St fashion store Minha, owned by competition judge Wendy Croskery.
“There were some amazing designs — I thought these two would stand out in the window,” Wendy says.
After initial judging held in-house at each individual school, a panel of teachers across Hawke’s Bay secondary schools scored each entrant on their skill and craftsmanship while an independent industry based judging panel scored the garments on the runway. Special award winners in the 2018 Design Make & Model Competition are Napier Girls’ High student Eleanor Hollings-Hatton (left) and Hastings Girls’ High student Kym Sedcole with judge Wendy Croskery.
“Our marks were based on how the garments were styled by the girls and how they looked on the runway. It is a great competition to be part of — I was thrilled to be asked and involved in an event that supports young, emerging designers and gets them thinking about their creativity — fashion
or otherwise,” Wendy says.
