Appeal raises kids’ hospital equipment
More than 10,000 Hawke’s Bay children are seen at the emergency department of the hospital every year. Now the DHB is asking the Countdown’s Kids Hospital Appeal for help to fund much-needed neonatal care equipment and hearing aid restoration equipment.
Countdown Napier manager Phillipa Reston says the Napier Countdown stores have fundraised for the Hawke’s Bay Hospital since 2007.
“It’s a great idea. We have raffles, a kids’ lucky dip, sausage sizzles, collection containers at the checkouts and cake stalls,” Phillipa says.
The hospital gives Countdown a list of equipment each year, with neonatal and hearing restoration equipment on this year’s wish list.
“With the extra equipment they will be able to provide better care, and better outcomes for children. Supporting children is important.”
HBDHB service director communities, women and children Claire Caddie says it was grateful for Countdown’s support.
“The DHB is very grateful for the opportunity to work with Countdown and their staff to raise money for equipment that helps support children and their families in hospital.
“This year’s target for the four Hawke’s Bay Countdown stores is $22,000, with the aim to raise $1m from Countdown stores nationwide.
“So far we have raised $12.8m over 12 years — $886,000 of that for the HBDHB.”
Phillipa says it’s important the community knows how involved and supportive the hospital team is too.
“They are as active as we are — it’s brilliant. And people continue to support us. We really appreciate this year after year — we couldn’t do it without everyone’s support.”
Countdown’s general manager corporate affairs, safety and sustainability Kiri Hannifin says its team and customers wanted to make such a significant difference to thousands of sick Kiwi kids and their wha¯ nau.
“Whether it’s a vision screening device for Christchurch Hospital, a giraffe warmer for Waikato’s neo-natal unit, or simply play equipment for Whanga¯ rei Hospital’s wha¯ nau house, this year’s appeal aims to help make a child’s stay easier. Even the smallest comforts can make a real difference.”
The appeal runs until Sunday, October 27.
