Rotary puts the sweetness into citrus

Ahuriri combines with Dunedin club for successful citrus drive

-

The Rotary Club of Dunedin Harbour, formerly Dunedin East, has been fortunate to team up with the Rotary Club of Ahuriri in their annual citrus fruit project.

Collecting surplus fruit from people’s backyards and transporting to the other end of the country, where it is distributed to those in need, exemplifies the strength of the Rotary network.

The gathering and distribution of potential rotting fruit, producing methane, is instead available for people’s nutrition and enjoyment — a win-win situation, says Rotary Club of Ahuriri member Don Alexander.

“For the last five years we have repackaged the fruit and delivered to various charities in the Otago region including Methodist Mission, Presbyterian Support, Salvation Army, etc.

“Some fruit was further processed and made into marmalade,” Don says.

“More recently we have packaged the fruit and delivered to Kiwiharvest, who have a very efficient and targeted distribution programme in place.

“Thank you Rotary Club of Ahuriri, Hookers transport, Kiwiharvest and all our involved members.”

Don says this year’s Citrus Drive has been very successful and the club wishes to thank all the people who put fruit in the bins which were spread around.

“A very big thank you. The fruit which was sent to Dunedin was very well received and distributed to many homes.

“Our drive ended on the August 31 and we will look forward to your support again next year.”
