Young kayakers set for world stage

While Lisa Carrington continues to dominate the global kayaking scene with a double gold medal performanc­e in the K1 200m and 500m at the World Championsh­ips in Canada, Hawke’s Bay students are ramping up their final training before heading off to the world stage in their own age groups.

Ex-Lindisfarn­e student Daniel Brown, in his first year at Waikato University, has been selected to represent New Zealand in the 2022 OCF Under-23 World Championsh­ips to be held in Szeged, Hungary, from August 31-September 4.

Damien Da Silva of Napier Boys’ High School will be representi­ng New Zealand in the Junior World Sprint Kayaking Championsh­ips in Szeged.

He has also been selected to compete in the Asia Pacific Sprint Cup in Ishikawa, Japan, late September.

In the longer kayak distance, Kate Skeels of Taradale High School and Julien Da Silva of Napier Boys’ High have been selected to represent New Zealand as juniors for the ICF World Marathon Championsh­ips to be held in Ponte de Lima, Portugal, from September 26 to October 2.

All four are members of Hawke’s Bay Kayak Racing Club.
