Memories of VSA

Nelson man Mike Monti is featured in a Volunteer Services Abroad 50th anniversary exhibition at the Nelson Provincial Museum. Mr Monti is pictured in Tonga in 1970 alongside the late Ofa Simanu in one of the 50 photographs in the show. The pair are selecting a song from a Barbra Streisand album to play on Radio Tonga, where he was programme training manager from 1969 to 1971. ‘‘Radio Tonga used to broadcast death and funeral notices as part of the nightly public service half hour. I was asked to find a suitable piece of music, which would ‘isolate’ these notices from everything else.’’ Mr Monti says they were still using the same piece of music when he visited 35 years later.
