The Nelson Falcons are ready to fly in their first game in the 2013 ASB Youth League, on Sunday at Trafalgar Park.

The Falcons face a tough test against defending champions Canterbury United. Head coach Davor Tavich will name his starting team on Thursday, with one new member among those being considered.

The Nelson Falcons team announced a late signing with 16-year-old Taylor Hall-Jones joining from Lower Hutt City. Lower Hutt director of coaching Brendan McIntyre has said he believes Hall-Jones is close to selection for the Wellington Phoenix youth talent side.

The opening home game for the new Nelson Falcons team will be a festival of football, hosted in part by the FC Nelson club. Local clubs will be involved in all of the Nelson Falcons home games, in an effort to raise the profile of, and money for, the club.

The entertainment and football games, organised by FC Nelson, will fill Trafalgar Park from 11am, starting with a curtainraiser between the FC Nelson Nike Cup team and the FC Nelson Gunners in a match of 30-minute halves.

This will be followed by a second curtainraiser at 12.30pm with two more FC Nelson teams playing seven-a-side games 15min each way.

Just before the 1.30pm kickoff, a world record attempt will be made at 1pm – there will be a race around Trafalgar Park to find the world’s fastest 18-volt power drill trolley, run by the Nelson Trolley Club.

Then, at 1.30pm the Nelson Falcons kick off their inaugural campaign, against Canterbury United.

Entrance to the park from 11am is free.

People will be encouraged to buy a programme for a gold coin donation for a chance to win prizes. There will be bouncy castles for the kids, and food and drink for all, with proceeds going to FC Nelson.

The Nelson Falcons and FC Nelson are urging fans to support their regional football team as they take on the 2012 ASB Youth League champions.
