Alan Bryson made his move on the bike and never looked back.

The endurance athlete won the Nelson Triathlon Club Olympic distance championships at Rabbit Island on Sunday morning, taking the lead on the 40km cycling leg and holding that advantage all the way to the finish line after completing the 10km run.

Bryson won the 30-39 age group and took overall honours, with Jon Linyard, who was first out of the water after the 1.5km swim section, taking out the 40-49 category.

Stu Cottam was victorious in the 50-59 age group.

Carolyn Squance, competing in the 50-59 age group, was the first female across the finish line, with Erin O’Connor taking out the 40-49 section and Lesley Stephens winning the 60-69 age group.

More than 40 competitors took part in the six different events that were on offer on Sunday, though the full Olympic distance was the highlight.

Glen Bathgate led the pack on the short triathlon with a 250m swim, followed by a 10km cycle and ending with a 2.5km run over a mix of tarmac and gravel roads.

Team Adam and Jonno covered a similar course, swapping the swim for an alternate 2.5km run to win the short duathlon.

The sprint triathlon was the most popular event, with a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. This was won by Nelson triathlete Hayden Squance with a convincing lead, with Mathew Lowe winning the duathlon option.

The long course duathlon was won by Kendrick Richie.
