Sweet match for peanut butter lovers

- CARLY GOOCH

It’s a little bit nutty, a little bit smooth.

Lewis Road Creamery in the Bay of Plenty and Nelson peanut butter company Pic’s have joined forces to create a peanut butter flavoured ice cream.

Pic’s founder Pic Picot said the creation had been in the pipeline for several months after Lewis Road Creamery had approached him.

He said the company had been involved in the tasting and working on labels, ‘‘but we had to sign all sorts of secrecy things’’.

‘‘I’ve been desperately trying to keep it secret and not say a word to anybody.’’

The match had been hinted at on social media, and was finally confirmed yesterday with a post on Pic’s Facebook page.

After only an hour, there were more than 500 comments endorsing the new flavour, which includes flakes of chocolate.

Picot said the taste it was ‘‘like eating cold peanut butter but not as gluggy.

‘‘And the chocolate, you bite into a bit of chocolate and you sort of think there’s a piece of peanut butter but as it melts in your mouth you realise it’s chocolate. It’s pretty wicked.’’

Pic’s was established in Nelson 10 years ago and now exports its spreads around the world.

Picot said it was an easy decision to pair up with Lewis Road as the creamery was into ‘‘making good food that tastes good’’.

Lewis Road has been involved with other successful collaborations with Kiwi brands including creating chocolate milk with Whittaker’s and ice cream with berry company, OOB.

Picot didn’t want to say too much about the company’s next venture but he did say it was working on a product with Tasman Bay Berries.

The new ice-cream is set to hit supermarkets on Wednesday. Nelson New World said it would be on their shelves by midday.

Other Lewis Road Creamery stockists include Fresh Choice Nelson and Richmond, Four Square Wakefield and Tapawera and New World Motueka and Stoke.
