Fifty free feeds for those in need

- SARA MEIJ

The desire to help Nelsonians has prompted food business Kiwi Kai to donate 50 meals to the Koha Shed to give away.

Koha Shed’s Cara Gledhill said this week they would start giving away one or two meals a day via their Facebook page.

She said people who came to the Koha Shed asked for food ‘‘all the time’’.

‘‘It’s not just for families either, for an elderly person this will be fabulous, [someone] who probably doesn’t cook for themselves.

‘‘This is a good decent meal, [and] to be able to pick up on the day when it has been made fresh, [is] just a real treat I think.’’

Gledhill said a takeaway meal was also something people often didn’t get. ‘‘And it’s good food, you know, it’s not fast food.’’

She said the fact that Kiwi Kai was ‘‘willing to give away meals because [they] think there’s people out there who need them’’ aligned with the mission of the Koha Shed.

Kiwi Kai co-owner Reni Gargiulo said she felt a need to support the community.

She said the business was giving away 50 meals through the Koha Shed because ‘‘we have the opportunity to work, employ and live OK, but not everyone does’’ and there was ‘‘a sincere need’’ to help out families in need in Nelson.

Gargiulo said she chose the Koha Shed because ‘‘their work is amazing’’.

‘‘If we can help in a small way it is great. We don’t see ourselves as being generous we see this as an essential requirement of business today, to give back.’’

Tips from customers also went towards the koha.
