Why weapons?

-

I read with interest the notification that the NZ Army will be conducting exercises involving the Nelson CBD from February 19 to March 23.

This notification states that weapons will be included. May I ask why? Is it aimed to have the public become accustomed to having a permanent presence?

As a New Zealand citizen and resident of Nelson, I do not consent to having anyone with any weapons on our streets especially when there are children about. This is unacceptable.

We need to be teaching and modelling peace, love, compassion and kindness, not continuing to glorify the people and the weaponry that contribute to violence and war. The world is seeing enough of that. politics he is getting plaudits as he was recognised as well meaning.

But because he was an economist, his good intentions were flawed.

We should not be just considered as economic components.

The economic theories we have endured have been proven to be false gods.

In science when reality conflicts with a theory, the theory is falsified and treated as a failure. De-regulation; failed. Privatisation; failed. Trickle down; failed. Fair shares of the benefits of NZ wealth; failed.

Inequality of wealth and income is connected to most social harm indicators and precedes later costs.

Worrying about "the economy", we worry only about money and business. People should come first.

As Shakespeare said in King Lear.’’ Act 4, Scene 1: ‘‘So distribution should undo excess. And each man have enough.’’ years, we could all start envisaging a satisfactory Rocks Road esplanade that could be achieved in that time frame.

Wouldn’t that be good for Nelson?

At the same time we could urge commuters who drive into Nelson for work to take at least one passenger.

A good website to arrange ride sharing is www.smarttravel.org.nz. This would not only ease congestion but also reduce carbon emissions.

We’d also advocate express buses to serve the satellite towns beyond Richmond. I believe, like Wayne Daniel, that amalgamation of the two councils must be part of the transport solution long-term. But basically we have to proceed by recognising what can happen immediately, indeed urgently.

The question we all should be debating is - Do we have a Godgiven right to put as much carbon into the air as we like, and contribute as much as we want to global warming?

Each person encased alone in a fossil-fuelled car clogging up our existing roads and then demanding more is helping to guarantee a seriously degraded future for everyone. off to the beach. Or you may save money on the after-school care. Or you may choose to spend time with your children. You may do even better than that. For yourself and the boss.

You may achieve more in four days than five.

It’s brilliant PR too by Barnes. By hiring a PR person and going public, he is being talked about and his ideas discussed.

Barnes told me he’s been particularly emotional this week reading the emails from staff.

The feedback has stopped him in his tracks. Solo mums have told him this will change their life and their relationship with their child. It might also save some of his workers, who are parents too, plenty of money.

He reckons it’ll save him too. His costs will go down. It’s win win win. Internationally, companies that do it, rave about it. They claim workers become fiercely loyal to their workplace and employer and want to win and want to produce more. fires on a number of fronts.

She had little time for the Greens back then and wasn’t going to put her prime ministerial backside on the line for a Greenie artist who’d rather go kayaking on a Monday.

But how times change. And people and ideas can meet again in a world that’s gone nuts. And then some.

The real challenge is getting bosses to rethink what success looks like. It’s a leap of faith. Our employers need to keep their businesses winning. Good staff matter. Great staff are hard to come by.

Ultimately it’s about trust and performance. If the boss trusts you to be more productive for him or her while having more of a life, then what are we waiting for?

Don’t let evolution and innovation be someone else’s fourday week. If this takes off, those who don’t adopt it may well disappear anyway. Who would want to work for that dinosaur? Keep up with the times.
