Nelson Mail reporter wins
Nelson Mail reporter Nina Hindmarsh has been named junior reporter of the year.
Hindmarsh, who is based in Golden Bay, was crowned at the Voyager Media Awards in Auckland last night.
Mail editor Victoria Guild said she was not surprised by Hindmarsh’s win.
‘‘She is a very talented journalist who consistently produces work of an excellent standard and is thoroughly deserving of this award.’’
Judges said Hindmarsh stood out in a ‘‘remarkably accomplished field’’ for the quality of her writing and the breadth of her portfolio.
Her article about an unpopular community of squatters called The Tribe was described as a superb, colourful and finely balanced piece of work.
She also submitted a fine piece of investigative journalism on the scam known as ‘‘gift giving’’, and an informative but moving spot news story about a whale stranding which the judges said showed ‘‘an ability to work well in a range of journalistic genres’’.
Stuff was named Website of the Year, an honour it shared with joint winner Newsroom.co.nz.
The judges applauded Stuff’s breaking news coverage, editorial campaigns, innovation and in-depth investigative reporting.
Nelson Mail news director Warren Gamble was a finalist for feature writing, health/education or general, and visual journalist Braden Fastier was a finalist in the photographer of the year category.
Guild said the paper was fortunate to have staff of such high calibre in its Nelson newsroom.
The Press won Newspaper of the Year (more than 30,000 circulation), and was described by the judges as ‘‘vital’’ and ‘‘very much alive and kicking, much like the city it serves’’.
‘‘At its best, The Press brings a (powerful) sense of urgency, intimacy and immediacy to the job of informing its readers,’’ the judges said.
The Waikato Times won the Newspaper of the Year (up to 30,000 circulation).
