Donkers to coach Cantabs
Brendon Donkers has been announced as Canterbury’s new coach to replace Black Caps boss Gary Stead.
Donkers, who was confirmed for the role by Canterbury Cricket yesterday, has served as Stead’s assistant since 2014.
Stead was this month named to take over the national side from Mike
Hesson.
Around the same time, Stuff revealed
Donkers was likely to be appointed to the role of Canterbury coach despite a critical end of season review last summer.
Stuff understands several players voiced displeasure in their end of season reviews and Donkers copped the brunt of criticism.
But Canterbury Cricket chief executive Jez Curwin said the feedback in the end of season reviews hadn’t provided serious cause for concern.
Donkers has spent time in charge in over the past two seasons as part of the association’s succession planning – including a successful Ford Trophy victory in 2016-17.
‘‘I am thrilled to be named head coach of the men’s team,’’ Donkers said.
‘‘It’s a privilege to continue my involvement with such a quality association and a quality group of players.
‘‘This is an exciting time for Canterbury Cricket as we continue to develop our young squad for future success on and off the field.’’
The domestic season starts on October 10 when Canterbury take on the Central Stags in the opening round of the Plunket Shield.
