Vehicle over hydrant hinders firefighters
A vehicle parked over a fire hydrant could have turned a Nelson house fire into something much more serious. When fire crews arrived at the blaze in Washington Valley early yesterday morning, the blocked hydrant made it difficult to get water to the burning house at the top of a shared driveway, station officer Craig Davies said. He said a call about the fire was received about 2am, but it was made to the Nelson Fire Station instead of 111. Davies said the house was being renovated, so no-one was home. The fire started in the ceiling, causing a lot of smoke damage and wrecking 40 per cent of the house. Investigators were looking into the cause, but it was ‘‘nothing suspicious’’, Davies said.
