Man saved by strangers

A man in Clive, in the Hawke’s Bay, had a ‘‘lucky escape’’ when he was rescued from the water by a group of onlookers. police say. The man, believed to have been collecting mussels off the beach on Monday, was spotted in trouble in the water by two men fishing nearby. One of them called 111 before grabbing a long piece of rope from his ute. A woman walking by offered to get into the water, and was able to reach the ‘‘struggling’’ man and get the rope around him, police said. The fishermen then helped to bring the man to shore. He was unresponsi­ve when police arrived but was able to be revived.
