City defender forced to play in goal At a glance

Ten-man Manchester City escaped with a 1-1 draw in their Champions League match against Atalanta after finishing without a recognised goalkeeper on the field.

With Ederson replaced at halftime due to injury and backup Claudio Bravo sent off in the 81st minute, it was up to England international right-back Kyle Walker to see out the match in goal.

Wearing Bravo’s No 1 shirt, Walker made one nervy save from a freekick but was barely troubled by the Italian club as Manchester City hung on to secure a draw.

Atalanta looked headed for a fourth straight loss in Group C when Raheem Sterling – who scored a hat-trick in Manchester City’s 5-1 win in the reverse fixture – put the Premier League champions in front in the seventh minute.

However, Gabriel Jesus dragged a penalty wide three minutes before halftime and Mario Pasalic levelled for

Atalanta four minutes into the second half.

Atalanta dominated the second period and their winning chances increased when Bravo was sent off for a last-man foul on Josip Ilicic.

Having already brought on Bravo as a halftime replacement for Ederson, manager Pep Guardiola had to put Walker in goal. The defender saved the resulting freekick and City managed to see out the final minutes.

Elsewhere, City’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur secured a thumping 4-0 away win over Red Star Belgrade.

Three days after leaving the field in tears over his role in an opponent’s injury, Son Heungmin scored twice as Spurs ran riot in the Serbian capital.

After hitting the crossbar in the buildup to Tottenham’s first goal, Son put the result beyond doubt with two goals in the space of four second-half minutes, sealing Tottenham’s second straight Champions League win since losing 7-2 to Bayern Munich last month.

The win gives Tottenham a strong hold on second place in Group B, with a four-point cushion to Red Star in third. Leaders Bayern beat Olympiakos 2-0 in the night’s other game and have advanced to the knockout stage.

Despite the win, there’s still pressure on manager Mauricio Pocchettino ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Sheffield United.

Home and away wins over Red Star are Tottenham’s only wins from their last seven games in all competitions.
