Havili to fill big shoes for Crusaders

- Robert van Royen

Scott Robertson has sprung a selection surprise in the form of David Havili for tomorrow night’s blockbuster clash against the Chiefs in Hamilton.

Regular fullback Havili will start at first five-eighth in place of All Blacks pivot Richie Mo’unga, who played through minor groin and knee strains last week against the Waratahs.

Earlier in the week, assistant coach Scott Hansen indicated Mo’unga was on track to take his place in the No 10 jersey. However, head coach Robertson isn’t willing to risk aggravating the injury so early in the campaign.

‘‘[If it was] a final, he could have played, it’s one of those situations,’’ Robertson said.

‘‘We just know it’s important we look after him for the long term. It was a call that we made for him, ‘just look after yourself and Dave will respond’.’’

Robertson has long praised Havili’s ability to play anywhere in the backline, but tomorrow will mark the first time he’s been asked to slot into the primary play-making role at Super Rugby level.

Havili, who last week played most of the second half in the midfield, played first-five at school and has occasionally lined up there for Tasman. But being asked to play a New Zealand derby against the Chiefs, who have opted to start Aaron Cruden in the No 10 jersey this week, is something else.

Robertson realises that, but pointed out opting for Havili over specialist pivot Brett Cameron, a one-test All Black, allowed him to start the excellent Fergus Burke has a quad complaint also played a part in the decision.

‘‘Dave brings experience. We know that’s important in these big games. And also it allows us to put Will Jordan on the field.

‘‘Dave’s skill-set is amazing. He can slot in anywhere. One of his special talents is to play from 10 out to fullback, his kicking game is incredible and he’s got great composure.

‘‘He’s slotted right in there [at training] and enjoyed it.’’

Weighing 95kg and standing 1.84m tall, Havili won’t shy away from lining up Cruden and his fellow Chiefs.

The 25-year-old beat a competitionleading 11 defenders last week, made four clean breaks and notched 111 metres in a bonus point win against the Waratahs.

While Mo’unga played the first half last week, Havili also shouldered the kicking duties and banged over six of eight attempts off the tee.

Handed a second consecutive start to begin the season, halfback Mitchell Drummond will partner in the halves with Havili, a childhood friend he grew up with at the top of the South Island.
