No ratepayer help
Wakatu Incorporation should be given every encouragement to forge ahead with its plans for a new library precinct (Nelson Mail, May 1) – but not with ratepayer support. Currently, the Trafalgar Centre can provide all that Wakatu attempts to promote. Although supported by ratepayers, this facility is not being promoted or fully utilised.
The council should simply retain the current library. There should be no more cunning spin to denigrate its condition. The current library is a better facility than many of those in large overseas cities.
Loading up the next generation with more very expensive and unwarranted structures, such as a climatorium, is not sound stewardship. Wakatu should consider doing what many worthy organisations do, and approach its supporters for financial support. Dan McGuire
