Headscarf policy dropped
French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has shelved plans to ban headscarves, in her latest attempt to woo undecided voters ahead of the election runoff on Sunday. Her campaign team has quietly removed the policy from her list of ‘‘priorities’’, in the latest attempt by Le Pen to move away from her hard-right image, which has dogged previous election campaigns. Le Pen’s proposal was to ban women from wearing headscarves in public places, with fines for violators. She had said it would be as simple as requiring vehicle passengers to wear a seat belt. Le Pen also wants to hold constitutional referendums on tougher immigration laws.
