Campaign slurs banned
Kenyan politicians have been banned from using slurs including ‘‘brown teeth’’ and ‘‘uncircumcised man’’, in an effort to cool tempers in what is tipped to be a vicious general election campaign. Awatchdog group promoting national unity has outlawed more than 20 expressions in several languages, in addition to ‘‘non-verbal nods’’. It will be monitoring social media, political rallies and speeches for trigger words. Kenya’s recent electoral history has been marked by fiercely contested campaigns in which candidates have invoked tribal differences to pit their supporters against one another.
