Activities aplenty ahead
Not all Pride celebrations involve sequins and lurex – Nelson’s Pride Week is a prime example. ‘‘There’s a bit of a stereotype that pride events are all disco music and loud and bright,’’ says Nelson Pride Incorporated chair Aimee Borlase. ‘‘That’s not for everyone.’’ Nelson Pride Week 2022 is in mid-swing this week, with activities and meet ups described as ‘‘accessible, low-key, and Covid friendly’’. ‘‘This year we had to keep in mind that things might have to be postponed, so we kept it smaller scale so the risk is minimised in case things do need to be cancelled,’’ Borlase said. ‘‘A lot of our events are more family orientated, so people can bring their kids and their whānau along as well.’’ Coming up over the weekend are a Rainbow Beach Clean Up on Tāhunanui Beach at 4pm today, a Saturgay meet up at Founders Cafe at 2pm tomorrow and a Pride Picnic and Sandcastle Competition at Moturoa/Rabbit Island at 1pm on Sunday. The week will come to a close with a screening of Kiwi doco Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses and a ceremony at the Pastorius-Waller Theatre at the Suter at 6.30pm on Monday. The year is the second year the event has been held. Borlase took over as a coordinator in mid-2020. ‘‘It’s just going to get bigger and better from here,’’ she said.
