New signings lift competition

- David Long Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane 8.25pm Sunday Grant Sutton Tigers $3.55, Cowboys $1.31

The arrival of Ronald Volkman and Freddy Lussick to the Warriors from the Roosters this week, will help the club in different ways, says coach Nathan Brown.

The Warriors have been one of the busiest clubs with player movement lately.

They lost Ash Taylor to retirement and Kodi Nikorima was granted an early release to join the Rabbitohs, while in have come halves Daejarn Asi from the Cowboys and Volkman, plus hooker Lussick.

The 19-year-old Volkman has been hailed as a potential superstar, but had his path blocked at the Roosters.

It could turn out to be as good a signing for the Warriors as picking up Reece Walsh from the Broncos was. At the Warriors he’s regarded as the half who will eventually replace Shaun Johnson, but there’s no time set on when that could happen.

Brown doesn’t know how long it will be before Volkman makes it to first-grade footy.

‘‘Where Ronald is going to get to over the next six to eight weeks, I honestly couldn’t tell you,’’ Brown said. ‘‘We’re not going to put any limits on where he’s going to get to, but we won’t be putting any pressure on him either.’’

Asi is only contracted to the club for the remainder of the season and no decision has been made yet on whether he’ll be offered a new deal and that’s the same situation with Lussick.

But it looks like Lussick has already gone ahead of Taniela Otukolo in the hooker pecking order and he’ll provide genuine competition to Wayde Egan for the No 9 jersey.
