Beijing’s big idea for pig farming – the sty-scraper
It has 26 storeys, air conditioning and maternity facilities. Its residents are, Chinese authorities say, going to be pigs. Beijing is planning a series of high-rises for pigs as part of efforts to reduce land use for farming. In the central city of Ezhou a company called Hubei Zhongxinkaiwei Modern Farming has created a skyscraper which it claims comes with air-conditioned and ventilated floors. The Ezhou project, which began two years ago and costs 4 billion yuan (NZ$939 million), has come as China is trying to meet the growing demand for the meat on limited land.
