Hanmer has warmest day

Temperatur­e records were broken across the country in October, Niwa’s latest monthly data shows. Hanmer Forest in Canterbury reached 28.8C on October 23, which was the warmest temperatur­e Niwa recorded during the month. Takapau Plains in Hawke’s Bay also set a temperatur­e record for warmth, reaching 25.6C on October 29. Manapouri dropped to -7.3C on October 6. That was the coldest temperatur­e Niwa recorded anywhere during October. Some other places with record low October temperatur­es were Whitianga (-1.8C), Rotorua (-3.5C), Hamilton Airport (-2.9C), New Plymouth (-1.3C), Greymouth (-1.8C) and Akaroa (-2.3C). Places with their highest recorded minimum daily October temperatur­e included Kaitaia (17.6C), Western Springs in Auckland (17.7C), Whakata¯ne (17.9C), Hastings (19.1C) and Palmerston North (16.6C). Nelson, with records dating back to 1862, had its warmest October daily minimum, with 15.8C on October 29.
