Climate action
A private jet flew over me on its way to Nelson Airport on Tuesday. The emissions impact of each passenger on that jet will be approximately 20 times more than on other aircraft.
What part of declared climate emergency don’t we understand?
Our region sponsored a 600-car rally, with the cars being brought in on trailers and driven for recreation around our roads, just weeks after our region’s worst flooding in history, made worse by greenhouse gases we produce in our cars.
At Ta¯hunanui Beach, the kids do bumper boats on small rafts, each with a two-cycle outboard motor spewing toxic, partially burned gas into the pool and the environment.
Next door is the go-kart concession, with constant climate warming as part of the recreational petrol burning.
We are building ever more suburbs with two-car garages, ready for the new inhabitants to clog our roads with mindbogglingly wasteful, slow-moving private auto traffic.
We are deep into the drastic effects of historic floods, vast wildfires, epic droughts, famine, and regional agricultural collapse.
Why are we waiting to act? Jace Hobbs
