New skin cancer clinic opens in Central Nelson

-

Katie Maver and Arwen Mohr, two doctors with a passion for skin cancer detection and treatment, have joined forces to open Nelson Skin Doctors. This specialised clinic offers expert care with a relaxed and welcoming feel in the heart of Nelson, located at 57 Collingwood Street. Katie and Arwen found their way to sunny Nelson from opposite corners of the globe, Katie, hailing from Hobart, Tasmania, and Arwen, raised on the East Coast of the United States.

Dr Mohr fell in love with New Zealand on her honeymoon in Nelson, while Dr Maver found love and a new home after a South Island working holiday led to her meeting her Nelsonian husband. Over 10 years later, their paths crossed in Nelson, introduced by a mutual friend who knew of their shared interest in skin cancer. They discovered they shared a dream of providing high quality care in an environment that is compassionate and friendly, leading to the birth of Nelson Skin Doctors. In addition to being experienced General Practitioners, Katie and Arwen have advanced training in dermoscopy, which enables them to identify suspicious skin spots at their earliest stages when treatment is often easier

and more effective.

They also have specialist training and experience in skin cancer treatment, including surgery, and are able to treat most skin cancers within the practice. Their commitment to prevention, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatment drives their practice. Nurse and practice coordinator Bridget Wild also brings a wealth of experience to the team and offers a warm welcome to all who visit the clinic.

If you have been worried about a skin spot or think it might be time for a skin check, Arwen, Katie and the Nelson Skin Doctors team invite you to book a full skin check and experience their expert care in a friendly environment designed to make you feel at ease. No referral is needed.

Located on Lower Queen Street in Richmond, the recently opened purpose-built Tasman Day Surgery offers clients an excellent option in private endoscopy and a variety of day stay surgical procedures. Currently those include eye surgery, gynaecology, ENT, general and skin surgery, and orthopaedics in addition to colonoscopy and gastroscopy. We plan to expand the surgical services provided in 2024 with plastic, dental and fertility surgery.

Creating a caring and compassionate environment, the friendly operational team work to provide exceptional support for their patients. General manager Lynda Wakefield says her team of nurses and administration staff can focus individually on each patient, providing confidence, reassurance, and continuity of care in a relaxed and approachable environment.

Reducing anxiety that is associated with undergoing procedures, TDS offers an infusion service for patients who need non-funded immunotherapy and chemotherapy, maintaining the highest quality of care. “For those who come through the private sector including those with health insurance, we can offer treatment close to home, without the need for travel to a big city.”

The design of the facility has been carried out by Arthouse Architects and thanks to local firm Opritech, Tasman Day Surgery has the most up-to-date operating theatre available in New Zealand. Keen to support other local enterprises, as much of the interior as possible has been purchased locally. Hand crafted furniture comes from Acorn Furniture in Motueka, linen is supplied by Alsco and even the sandwiches offered following surgery come from Vanilla Bean café next door. “It has been a real pleasure to work alongside other local businesses and support them as they have supported us,” says Lynda. Open since March 2022 the new facility has been receiving accolades from patients. “They love the calm and friendly atmosphere. Everyone who works here enjoys being in such a lovely environment and we are all totally patient-focused. We want everyone who comes through our doors to have the most positive experience possible.”

Appointments can be made with a referral from a GP, or alternatively,
