Hyundai Kona Electric
Kona leaps straight to electric drive.
Just months after its launch in New Zealand, Hyundai’s small SUV the Kona has added an all-electric model to its range. The move comes as New Zealand’s EV charging network undergoes rapid expansion that is encouraging more New Zealand businesses to adopt EVS as part of their vehicle fleets. The new zero-emission Kona Electric model builds on the technology of the IONIQ saloon, which launched here in February 2017 and was the top selling EV for the year. The technology-sharing has enabled Hyundai to steal a march on many of its rivals, who will have to engineer or retro-engineer for electric power if they are to compete. There are several versions of the Electric, but New Zealand will only take the long range 64kwh version. It will have a ‘real world’ range of around 400 km and is otherwise identical to the other models in the range. The Kona Electric will launch in early July.
