After experiencing the Redwoods Treewalk Rotorua during daylight hours, Lawrence was keen for a night-time visit to see the magnificent trees, along with the light from the beautiful lanterns that adorn them. He wasn’t disappointed. The lanterns cast interesting shadows over the forest floor, and the contrast of light and dark only emphasizes the scale of the redwoods. This scale was something he was keen to capture — not an easy task, given that the largest of these 116-year-old trees is 73m tall. Lawrence used a wide-angle lens to capture the height, and used as long an exposure as he could before the trees’ natural movement would distort the image. He captured his companion in a pool of light, dwarfed by the imposing trees, showing us that these trees exist far beyond a human scale.
