This November, one of the country’s leading portrait artists will lead a full-day workshop in Auckland designed to help photographers inject fresh creativity into their thought processes and their technical practice. Richard Wood, one of our most awarded photographers, is the star of Summit 2018, hosted by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP).
In his workshop, Richard will elucidate the art of creative storytelling through both a presentation and a live shoot. Those attending can look forward to adding new tools to their creative process, from technical lighting and editing through to exercises that help to access new ideas and whimsical thoughts.
“So many people claim ‘I’m just not creative’. My answer is, you were once; think back to when you were five years old. I will be covering some strategies and exercises that will challenge the attendees to create new ideas easily,” he explained. Richard has recently returned from Phoenix, Arizona, where he joined an international group of leading portrait artists, led by Australian Sue Bryce, in educating photographers from across the globe at The Portrait Masters conference. He will be sharing some of the more popular thought exercises that went down so well at that event. The presentation will be followed by a live shoot, in which Richard will demonstrate the way that he creates his signature painterly lighting style. Following this will be a look at the editing process and the way that the photographer creates an illustrative, fine-art feel to his images.
“There is definitely something in this day for everyone, and attendees will no doubt pull what they want from it,” Richard said. “My signature look is about the order and weight that I apply to each technique rather than just the techniques I am using, so people can pull different elements from all corners and use them how they wish within their own style or in creating a new style for themselves.” This is a rare opportunity to learn from Richard, as his teaching schedule is becoming increasingly international; he will be travelling to Las Vegas and Los Angeles in 2019 to continue developing his educational platform with The Portrait Masters, along with soon offering live critiques through the Richard Wood Fine Art Portrait Facebook group.
The Summit 2018 event, dubbed The Art of Creative Storytelling, will take place on 13 November at Mount Eden’s Horse and Trap bar. Tickets are strictly limited. Visit nzipp.org.nz for more details.
