New Zealand Golf Magazine
This month we sit down with the Leader of the New Zealand Labour Party.
We have a round with Andrew Little, Leader of the Labour Party.
01 Which three people, Alive or Dead, would you pick to play four ball with?
Barack Obama, Rory McIlroy, Greg Norman.
02 And the three people you would least like to play with?
Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un and Bashar al-Assad.
03 And your favourite course is?
Ohariu Valley Golf Club near Wellington. It's where I first played a lot when I was learning. It's nine holes, but physically demanding and very satisfying.
04 How far can you hit your seven iron?
Too often it's too far when I am close to the green.
05 Are you a member of a golf club or a “social” golfer?
Social golfer, but considering joining a club as I really enjoyed my last round. Just need to find more time!
06 Who is your favourite player to watch?
07 Tell us your best near miss or hole in one story?
My last game in fact. I was on a three par with my five iron and got within a few metres of the hole. I was at Karori Golf Club and that would be the closest I've got to a hole in one.
08 As a social golfer have you taken the odd mulligan or do you follow the strict rules of golf?
Plenty of mulligans and negotiable scoring on the particularly bad days. Certainly the more satisfying golf is when you're totally honest with yourself.
09 Will Tiger ever reclaim his mantle or roar?
Amazing golfer but I think he's peaked. There are so many great young golfers around now like Jordan Speith and Rory McIlroy.
10 And the strongest part of your game?
A drive off the fairway has always been my strongest stroke.
11 If you could pick one course to play, which one would it be and why?
It would have to be St Andrews because it's the home of golf.
12 Tell us about your best round.
The first time I went under 100 about 20 years ago at the Chamberlain Park Golf Course in Auckland.
13 Was golf always a sport for you? What other sports interests have you had?
I picked up golf after I finished my law degree so I had my weekends free and signed up with a professional. I also enjoy cycling, kayaking and skiing.
14 Do you have a favourite club?
The five iron as it's the most versatile giving you height and distance.
15 What NZ Region do you think presents golf the best?
Central Otago because of the spectacularsp backdrop of mountains anda lakes.
16 Who would you get the most satisfaction out of beating on a golf course?
17 With such a busy work schedule, where is your favourite place to relax and unwind?
It's Island Bay in Wellington where I live, and walking along the beautiful south coast with my wife Leigh and Harry our dog.
18 What is your career or life highlight so far?
The birth of our teenage boy Cam. You feel this huge responsibility for this fragile, wee life. And it comes with an incredible sense of satisfaction and joy just watching this young little life blossom into a gorgeous young man.
