Toy­ota moots pro­duc­tion Hilux Glad­i­a­tor

TOY­OTA NEW ZEALAND MAY MAR­KET A LESSrad­i­cal ver­sion of the Hilux Glad­i­a­tor Con­cept it showed at the 2017 Fiel­d­ays at Mys­tery Creek, Hamil­ton.

That fol­lows pos­i­tive feed­back from cus­tomers, says Toy­ota’s gen­eral man­ager of prod­uct, Spencer Mor­ris..

“We built it as a show­case ve­hi­cle… demon­strat­ing a broad spec­trum of cus­tomi­sa­tion, and we were thrilled at the re­sponse.”

Based on a stan­dard 4WD Hilux SR5, the Glad­i­a­tor con­cept was built with help from Retro Ve­hi­cle En­hance­ments.

It had a sus­pen­sion lift kit with off­set 20-inch al­loy wheels, a bull­bar and winch, sump guard, snorkel, bolt-on flares, and a sports bar with cus­tom mounts for the spare tyre and tools.

LED lights adorned the roof rack and bull­bar, and the body­work got cus­tom Glad­i­a­tor graph­ics.

The cabin was up­hol­stered in red leather, with car­bon fi­bre-style trim and Gla­di­a­tor­branded mats.

“Any com­mer­cially avail­able Glad­i­a­tor model will be slightly more prac­ti­cal” says Mor­ris. “Some of the parts on the con­cept would need a spe­cial low vol­ume cer­ti­fi­ca­tion.”

He says a pre­vi­ous Glad­i­a­tor sold well, with more than100 re­tailed in the last 18 months.
