LDV disappointed at G10’s crash test rating

New Zealand LCV - - NEWS | ROUND-UP -

VAN DISTRIBUTOR LDV NEW ZEALAND SAYS IT’S DISAPPOINTED that its rear-wheel drive LDV G10 gained only three stars in the latest round of ANCAP crash testing.

“LDV NZ and SAIC are disappointed with this result and will use the valuable data from this test to improve the LDV G10’s safety performance,” LDV NZ spokesman Warren Willmot told LCV News.

Willmot says LDV’S parent company SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), China’s largest automotive manufacturer, “recognises the importance of safety and is committed to making all future products from LDV achieve a minimum of a five-star ANCAP score.”

Announcing the three-star rating in July, ANCAP said it applies to all LDV G10 petrol and diesel van and people mover variants sold in New Zealand and in Australia from mid-2015.

James Goodwin, the chief executive of Australia-based ANCAP, said it was “a disappointing result for LDV and consumers…”

He cited “a number of serious concerns with the G10’s structural performance with the driver footwell rupturing and excessive pedal movement.

“Steering column and dash components were also a potential source of knee injury for the driver and passenger.”

The G10, which has dual front airbags, scored an overall 24.49 points out of 37, and gained 9.7 out of 16 in the frontal impact and 16 out of 16 in the side impact test.

The G10 was criticised for not having side chest-protecting and head-protecting curtain airbags as available options.

It was also criticised for not having autonomous emergency braking which is not a mandatory requirement for gaining a five-star rating until next year.

ANCAP said the G10’s rating was limited to three stars because of the lack of side head-protecting airbags.

Speaking more generally about light commercial vehicles, Goodwin said the safety standards of cargo and passenger vans “remains well below those offered in other segments.”

He said 67 percent of vans rated by ANCAP “have a rating of four stars or less, so we urge all brands to ensure an emphasis on safety carries across all market segments.”
