UTE AND SUV SALES ARE ALSO BOOMING IN AUSTRALIA WHERE THE Toyota Hilux was the biggest-selling vehicle overall in June, outpacing all passenger vehicles.

The Australian motor industry’s statistical service VFACTS says new vehicle sales achieved a best-ever monthly result in June, setting a new record of 134,171.

That was a 4.4 percent increase on the previous best result of 128,569 recorded in June last year.

SUVS and light commercials (LCVS) drove this June’s strong sales in Australia.

SUV sales rose 11.7 percent over June 2016, and LCVS were up by 12.2 percent. Contrastingly, passenger car sales were down by 5.9 percent compared with the same month last year.

Australian motor industry group, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, said that a highly competitive market, low interest rates and the government’s instant asset write-off provisions were likely contributors to the June result.

The June sales spike had year-to-date results tracking 0.2 percent ahead of the same period of 2016.

The medium SUV segment achieved the most significant June volume growth with 5402 sales, a rise of 32.6 percent; large SUV sales were 20.8 percent up, and 4X4 ute sales rose by 16.7 percent.

The SUV market growth reflected demand across all buyer types with sales to business up by 16.6 percent, sales to government up 8.4 percent and private sales up by 5.4 percent compared with the same month last year.

Light commercials showed a similar pattern across all the buyer groups with business purchases up by 16.6 percent, sales to government up by 12.5 percent, and private by 2.6 percent.

Toyota led June with a market share of 18.3 percent, followed by Mazda on 9.3 percent, and Hyundai with 9.1 percent.

The Toyota Hilux ute remained Australia’s top-selling vehicle with 5461 sales, followed by the Ford Ranger (5051), the Toyota Corolla (3830), the Hyundai Tucson (3741 sales), and Mazda 3 with 3490.

Main: The Toyota Hilux was the bestselling vehicle overall in Australia in June, followed by the Ford Ranger. The reverse was the case in NZ. Insert: Hyundai’s Tucson SUV was Australia’s fourth best-selling vehicle in June.
