Toni Street
The Seven Sharp presenter grew up on a Taranaki dairy farm enjoying “super-thick porridge” made by her dad after he’d finished the milking. A meal at Mike Hosking’s house, however, involves a lot of red wine, says Street. “He has a fabulous collection.”
How do you describe your lifestyle? Super busy and active. We’ve had to be more health conscious because of my [Churg-Strauss] auto-immune condition and that’s been positive for the whole family. Is the condition influenced by diet? My specialist believes eliminating sugars and cutting back on carbohydrate can be beneficial. I’ve noticed it evens out my energy levels.
Along with Seven Sharp, you’re also on radio show
The Hits on Saturday mornings and starring in TVNZ’s new show Spellbound. How do you balance work and staying healthy? I have to be organised. To ensure we have a healthy low-carb, low-sugar dinner, I make it before I leave for Seven Sharp at about 2.30pm. Some days that can be really hard to squeeze in between kindy drop-offs and the kids’ activities. I try to have frozen back-up meals in case I run out of time. The bonus of a low-carb diet is that cauliflower rice and courgette noodles take no time to cook.
What’s your typical breakfast? A paleo cereal with full-fat milk, coconut yoghurt and some berries.
For lunch I … have leftovers, salmon sashimi or soup. My evening meal … could be butter chicken with cauliflower rice, or meatballs with courgette noodles.
What snacks do you eat? Most days I have a coffee for morning tea and for afternoon tea carrot sticks with peanut butter, or almonds. I’m a real sweet tooth and try to satisfy that with a few squares of 85% chocolate.
How do you unwind? Exercising is a huge de-stress for me. I try to run two to three times a week, and Mummies Fit Boot Camp is a chance to catch up with friends and take my mind off work while getting the benefits of exercising. It’s nice to have friends who aren’t in the media to remind me there is life outside TVNZ.
